This edition of Hello from… takes us to Rhodes, Greece where my Finnish friend, Ulla went on vacation earlier this year.
Rhodes is the largest of Greece’s Dodecanese Islands and is known for both it’s resorts and ruins left behind from the Crusades.
1| Have you ever been to Greece before, or was this your first trip? I traveled to Greece in the end of April 2015 for a week. This was my first time in Greece and I had dreamed of it for a long time. I stayed on the island of Rhodes, in the capital of Rhodes that is called Rhodes as well (The island and the capital of it have the same name!) I chose this place, because many people had recommended it to me. People say, there are something to do for everybody. I wanted to enjoy for the beach life, ancient architecture, museums and Greek food myself.
2| What city/cities did you visit? We stayed in the city of Rhodes, but one day we rented a car and drove around the island. First, we visited the ancient city of Kameiros which is situated at the north coast of this island. This city was built in 1455 BC. In 226 BC there was a big earthquake, when the oldest buildings were destroyed. That’s why the oldest parts of the city, which are seen today, were built in 226 BC or after that.
After visiting Kameiros we drove through the island to the south coast to the city of Lindos. Nowadays there are just a few hundred inhabitants in this town, but its one of the most photogenic places of the Aegean sea. The temple of Athena was built in 342 BC to the old Acropolis Hill. The view down to the town and the sea is awesome from the top of this hill. In addition, and interesting characteristic of this town is that all the buildings are white.
Last, we visited the town of Faliraki, which is situated next to the city of Rhodes. Faliraki is known for its beaches and the night life. Nowadays Faliraki has a little bit bad reputation, because ten years ago there was a lot of crime in this town. Luckily, Faliraki is getting its reputation back gradually. The town by the sea is brand new and the whole coast is full palm trees, hotels and pool areas.
3| Where did you stay while in Rhodes? We stayed in the Hotel Cactus in the City of Rhodes. The hotel was situated literally in the eastern point of this island. The hotel was 3 star hotel and included breakfast. The pool area was quite small, but I didn’t mind it. Plus there was a beach on the other side of the road. I was very satisfied with my stay at this hotel.
4| Did you try any amazing restaurants while there? We wanted to try as many restaurants as possible. Unfortunately, some of the restaurants were still closed because the tourist season hadn’t started yet. The city is full of restaurants with delicious dishes. I recommend eating in those ones which are full of people and where the local people eat. I found those the best and the cheapest. 🙂
5| What was your favorite favorite dish? I’m vegetarian myself and I wanted to try as many Greek dishes as possible. I enjoyed Greek salad, vegetarian pitagyros and sword fish. I also liked pita bread with tzatziki dip, Greek cheese, olives and Greek yoghurt with fruits. My boy friend instead tried all kind of meat dishes made of sausage, lamb and pork. I liked Greek food a lot and I didn’t get any bad experiences with Greek cuisine. 🙂 Some restaurants instead were quite expensive.
6| What are the place/places you would suggest to someone going to Greece for the first time? I liked the city of Rhodes a lot because there are so many places to see. Renting a car for a day or a couple of days is quite cheap and its very easy to drive outside of the city. You can also make some day trips from the city of Rhodes by bus to other towns of the island. In addition they make lots of trips by ferry to the other islands of Greece as well as to the coast of Turkey.
In the city of Rhodes I liked the Old Town a lot. The old town is surrounded by the high stone fence. The main street of the old town is called Sokratous and there are lots of small shops and delicious restaurants. (The international shops are situated in the new town.) I also recommend to visit some historical places of the old town like The Street of the Knights as well as the Palace of the Knights and the Archaelogical Museum.
7| Do you plan on visiting Greece again and if so what part of Greece do you plan to visit next? I’d definitely would like to visit Greece again! I find Crete very interesting as well as Santorini and Corfu. I could also visit Rhodes again. 🙂 I find we went to Greece a little bit too early in the spring. Good thing is that there are not that many tourists in April and we saw lots of new places. In April is not that warm in Greece, so next time I travel there few weeks later.
Thanks for sharing, Ulla!
