I know… I know… when you see the title you’re thinking… Wait a minute there isn’t a My Fair Lady trilogy… There’s a Lord of the Rings trilogy, and there’s ‘The Godfather.’
Few people know that My Fair Lady is not the first time the classic tale appeared on the big screen.
First there was Pygmalion (starring Leslie Howard of Gone with the Wind fame) and Wendy Hiller. This film is black and white, and we were able to catch it on You Tube.
It is very like the version of the tale we know and love (My Fair Lady) but it has a much darker, Alfred Hitchcock feel about it. The lines are very similar as well, but the longer scenes are done in cuts instead of the more drawn out musical version of the story.
Okay, so I’m not huge on the whole musical thing… Yes, I enjoy Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera, but sometimes actors constantly breaking out into song is a bit much. Despite this I really enjoy all the rich colors, the wonderful acting skills displayed by the cast of this well-beloved film. The horse race and grand ball are my favorite parts of the film, and I always find myself throughly engaged up until the final words ‘Where the devil are my slippers?’
Tonight we will be watching ‘The Makeover’, where we will see Julia Stiles switch up a bit and become the Higgins character ‘Hannah’ and David Walton as Eliot.
We’ll have to see how this one measures up…
