On Thursday, June 21st, the Shain Gallery held its first Paper Show. All of the works for the show were on paper and all of the artists that the gallery represents were part of the show (including artists who had not done work on paper before!)
Before heading out on our mini break, we popped into the Shain, because after seeing the videos on the Shain’s Insta-Stories, we knew that we had to see the show for ourselves before we left town. It did not disappoint.
Aren’t those flowers absolutely gorgeous?!
This was my first time seeing the works by Charleston, SC-based artist Whitney Stoddard, an artist that I’ve been following via Instagram for awhile now. I’ve always loved the elegant yet minimalistic interpretation of the female silhouette and she had a whole wall to herself for the show. Her work is on tea-stained paper created with tea from the Charleston Tea Plantation. The artist then draws her figures using a combination of charcoal sketch, acrylic paint and India ink.
Another favorite from the show were the Peony studies from artist Lynn Johnson. The paintings were even more gorgeous in person!
I always love seeing artist Roma Tison’s watercolor pieces. This is definitely one of my favorites.
J. Louis also contributed to the show with this impressive addition.
J Louis will be having a solo show at the Shain Gallery on Thursday, July 12th from 6-8pm, so be sure to stop by and and meet the artist.
Curt Butler will also be having a solo show at the Shain Gallery, so mark your calendars for August 24th. You can also visit the Shain Gallery’s website to see the full list of upcoming art shows.
