Even before we discovered our love for going to ballets, we’ve wanted to see Swan Lake and this past Thursday, The State Ballet Theater of Russia brought the well known ballet to Charlotte. By the time we arrived at the Knights Theater (where we see all the ballets performed by our amazing Charlotte Ballet with the exception of The Nutcracker which is at the Blumenthal) the lobby was already packed to bursting and we had to quickly get upstairs to our door and find our seats in one of the tier boxes. (These really are the most comfortable seats as they are stand alone and you don’t have other theater goers needing to get past up until the curtain goes up.)
The Prince’s friends are eager for the chase, but he begs them to leave him, and whilst he is alone the Swan Queen comes to him in the human form of Odette and tells her story. She is under the spell of an evil magician, Von Rothbart, and reveals that by day she and her friends are turned into swans.
Most of my favorite scenes aside from the main characters were those featuring the ‘jester’ character. He was absolutely hilarious during his scenes.
While there are alternate endings for Swan Lake, our production ended with Odette living and Prince Siegfried dies.
