Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera! – King of Siam
The King and I has to be the musicals that you need to see at least once in your life and we were so excited when we found out that it was coming to the Belk Theater here in Charlotte, North Carolina. As Charlotte continues to grow we are seeing more and more Broadway productions coming into town and we are eager awaiting each and every production that comes our way.
Set in 1860’s Bangkok, the story shares about the relationship between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a school teacher who comes to Siam to teach the King’s children.
The show featured all the songs we know and love from “Getting to Know You” to “Shall We Dance” and “Something Wonderful” and followed closely along what we’d seen in the 1956 film starring Yul Brynner and the King of Siam and Deborah Kerr as Anna Leonowens.
We were impressed from the moment the very first scene revealed and were immediately wrapped up in the magic of the show.
The production by the Lincoln Center Theater directed by Barlett Sher was one of the most amazing shows that we’ve seen to date. From the actors who played their roles so perfectly, to the costume’s and sets, this production was truly one not to be missed.
Even as we were leaving the theater we overheard others mentioning how much they loved the actors who played the roles of Anna Leonowens (Laura Michelle Kelly, Finding Neverland, Mary Poppins) and the King of Siam (Jose Llana, Wonderland, Flower Drum Song). Both actors frequently eliciting laughs from the entire audience after some of their especially witty lines.
It was every bit the ‘Breathtaking and Exquisite” production that The New York Times promised that it would be, and we consider ourselves extremely lucky to have had the chance to see this production.
