I was first introduced to Bare Candle Company when I was on the search for the perfect unscented candle. I’ve been sharing both of my unscented candles through much of my skincare/beauty styling posts via Instagram over the past few months and I can’t wait to start enjoying my candles now that fall has arrived and I can enjoy my candles for a cozy night in. (There’s something so relaxing about having a candle burning, especially this time of year!)
In today’s interview we get an inside look into Bare Candle Company with the founder herself, Ashlyn Rowland. Ashlyn runs the company and you’ll find her in the studio most days getting candles ready to ship to her loyal customers. So give the interview a read and get ready to stock up on your candles for the holiday season!
When did you first learn how to pour your own candles?
2017 was the first year I learned the process of candle pouring and what should – and should not – be in the candles I poured.
At what point during your candle making journey did you decide that you wanted to found your own company?
When I was learning to pour candles, I was already my first business creating custom coffee mugs and t-shirts. I initially got into candle making to create my own scents to burn while I made my mugs and shirts. After a few months, I absolutely loved creating candles and knew I needed to make the switch to what made me happier.
First of all I love that you offer unscented candles, but you also offer a variety of different scents in three categories (classic+fresh, earth+woods and summer+floral). How do you come up with the different scent profiles?
Sometimes, I have specific scents in my mind. I usually start with a base of what I know I want, such as an Orange scent. From there, I pair it with combinations that sound like they might go well together. All the combinations get tested and the best one is picked!
Another option is to “strategically” pair random scents together. Most of the time they fail, but you can strike gold sometimes! We used the random method to get “Avocado + Mint” and the “Green Clover + Aloe”.
Where do you source your materials?
We source materials locally, if possible. If they are not able to be located locally, we source within the US.
Are there particular scents that you enjoy using the most often in your own home?
“Grapefruit + Mandarin”, “Apple Cider”, and “Sugar + Lemon” are constantly being rotated in our home.
What do you enjoy the most about owning your own business?
I love the freedom and flexibility. I love being able to create scents that I enjoy, love and am proud of.
What is the best part about receiving feedback from happy customers?
I love going back and re-reading feedback from happy customers, especially if I am having a bad day.
In October you have several events planned in and around Atlanta, GA. What is the best part about hosting events, and what do you enjoy the most about the experience?
Unfortunately, due to COVID, all of our October events have been canceled and it looks like the rest of the 2020 events are being canceled as well. I most enjoy meeting all the people who are out supporting us, and all the other local, small businesses that are at the event.
You grew up being surrounded by entrepreneurs, what are your words of advice for those who dream of founding their own brand and making their mark on the world?
Never give up. Even if the rest of the world is kicking you down. Do what makes you happy and the rest will fall into place.
