For the first full day of our mini break, we decided to head down to Hickory, NC for their Farmer’s Market. Booths selling everything from micro-greens to soap line either side of the covered area that sits in between the buildings on Main Street and the former train station that now serves as a restaurant and specialty market.
Neither Mike (brother-in-law) nor my sister have been to the Downtown Hickory Farmers Market before, so we decided to introduce them to the market, The Natural Olive (an olive oil shop where we always get both our Garlic and Tuscan Herb Olive Oils) and have lunch at The Olde Hickory Station.
It’s easy to imagine what Main Street might have looked like when The Olde Hickory Station actually served as a train station, and although no trains went by during our visit, they’ve definitely come roaring through on previous visits.
I know wearing this Striped Strappy Maxi Dress (LOFT) and Canvas Espadrille Wedges (J Crew Factory) might not have been ideal for walking through the crowds, but I have been looking forward to sharing this outfit with you all for ages. As you already know I have a serious thing for stripes, and navy & white strips specifically. Plus, the yellow cardi (I’ve linked a similar one from Boden, but the one I’m wearing came from J Crew Factory) gives a pop of color and the Panama Hat (linked a similar one from J Crew, but mine is from LOFT) helped prevent anymore freckles. I’ve already got the dusting of freckles that pop up once I start getting more sun on the weekends, and I’m not looking to ‘connect the dots’ anymore than I already have.
If you love the market bag I’m carrying we picked it up at The Table Farmhouse Bakery in Asheboro, NC a few years back, and it’s been the perfect farmers market bag when we visit the Davidson or Hickory Farmers Markets. You could also use it as a picnic basket and it’s a good all round travel bag if you’re running around and want to give your look a more casual vibe.
This was the last bag of radish micro-greens, which we unfortunately lost out on. Have to have your cash or card ready the moment you decide you want something otherwise it will get snatched up! We attempted to grow micro-greens ourselves last year, but I think I’ll pick up some of these the next time I’m at our local market. No green thumb required.
Is there anything better than fresh berries during the Summer? Both the blackberries above and the blueberries below look absolutely scrumptious, yes?
Fresh herbs just ready to be planted… We have an abundance of herbs growing back home, and so far we’ve mostly stuck to using the parsley and basil in our recipes. However, I’m currently thinking up some drinks (and perhaps some desserts) where we can use some of our delicious lemon thyme which is my absolute favorite!
Another thing to love about farmers markets, are the booths with fresh flower bouquets. They always have some beautiful bouquets made, and there’s often an option to select your own flowers. If we’d brought a vase along with us, I definitely would have bought myself a bouquet because nothing brightens up a day like a fresh flowers.
Do you have a local farmers market that you like to go to? Let me know in the comments below.
