A Beautiful Mess, the latest exhibition by Selena Beaudry, opened up at the Hidell Brooks this past Friday. The exhibition which features new paintings, baubles and collages is spread out over the galleries three rooms flowing together for an exciting art-filled experience.
When we popped into the gallery this past Saturday, the day after the solo exhibition opened, Katharine Hidell Thomas (the co-owner of the Hidell Brooks Gallery) shared with us about Selena’s vision for the exhibition and how she wanted to reduce waste (that often happens when creating new artwork) by using everything from left over fabric scraps and unused paint fashioned into sculpture, so that nothing remained on the studio floor.
For the exhibition (and per the artist’s request) the second room of the gallery was transformed into a rich blue that added another dimension of artistry to the exhibition on display.
“Painting is my first love. The languages of paintings are what drives my work the slashes, smears, and blobs are like words or songs for me. Cutting up my paintings and drawings allows me to see my marks in a new fresh way. I create my pallets from the blobs, slashes, hatches and smears.” — Selena Beaudry
I especially enjoyed the fabrics and and paint ceiling creations that hung at the entrance to the second room of the gallery and then again into the third and final room which houses row after row of the paper scrap works that Selena is known for.
