In this interview, Jaime shares about when she first started dabbling into dyeing silks, an inside look into the process of creating hand dyed ribbons and a sneak peek at a wearable product that will be coming to her online shop.
All of the luxury silk ribbons, textiles and velvet from Honey Silks & Co are hand dyed in your studio here in North Carolina. When did you first learn about hand dying ribbons & textiles?
I actually started out as a photo prop vendor that has dabbled into dyeing for my props. I loved it so much I decided to take on larger textiles and shortly after, Honey Silks was born.
When did you decide to turn your talents into a business?
My two businesses sort of overlapped each other. I tested the market with a small release and after that it was officially a second business.
Is there a story behind the name ‘Honey Silks?’
I wanted the name “silks” in the shop name for branding and Google purposes. Honey is sweet and sourced from nature so we just took a family vote and Honey Silks won. 🤣👏🏻
Tell me about the process you go through when hand dying silk ribbon.
Our process consists of washing to prep the fabrics, natural based pigment mixing and two wash cycles and pressing. Our textiles are hand dyed, hand cut, and hand torn. It’s a labor of love for sure.
What are some of the natural products you use (such as avocados etc) to create your dyes?
Onion skins and avocados a lot. We do also source high quality plant based powder dyes to provide consistency in our colors.
Out of all of the colors you’ve produced over the years, do you have a personal favorite?
Dogwood. It’s a blush neutral and gorgeous.
Your ribbons are frequently featured in bridal bouquets. What do you enjoy the most about working with brides to create the perfect color of ribbon to tie in with their color scheme?
Actually, we work mostly with florists. I love getting to help select textures and palettes.
What are some of the beautiful ways customers have used your ribbons/textiles?
My favorite was on a wedding cake as an embellishment. Wall art weavings and bouquets are also a favorite.
In addition to ribbons, you also feature scrunches and pillowcases that are made by local seamstresses and hand dyed in your studio. Do you have more hand dyed products in the works?
Yes! We are launching silk face masks and will most likely continue to expand more silk wearables in the future.
What is do you love most about being part of the Charlotte community and basing your business here?
I love the ease of living in Charlotte. My studio is close to home and close to my kids while they are at school. It’s a growing and exciting city.
