On Friday night David Kroll’s latest exhibition opened at the Hidell Brooks Gallery. This has been an exhibition that we’ve been looking forward to all year, and we were absolutely mesmerized by David’s new work the moment we walked into the gallery. Compared to his previous work there was a noticeable lightness to the skies and clouds in the background, and the choice of flowers used throughout the show along with the lifelike birds (including the always elegant egrets) had us absolutely enchanted.
David Kroll received his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and a MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago. He taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for almost 20 years. David Kroll paints personal refuges and interior landscapes – places to visit for solace and sanctuary. Much of his work is intuitive. His paintings are more than visually interesting compositions of creatures, objects and environments.

You’ll remember from my interview with Katharine Hidell Thomas & Rebecca Brooks, that David has been a part of the gallery since the very beginning and he is definitely one of our favorite artists that the gallery represents. It’s nearly impossible to choose which of the paintings you love the most, but this smaller piece entitled, Nest and Pearls 2013 is definitely one of my favorites.

I also think the Orange 2018 piece would be a perfect addition to any breakfast nook.
The September exhibition also featured the largest collection of paintings that we’ve seen from artist Ron Porter.
Ron Porter recently retired from Vanderbilt University where he was a Professor of Art for 14 years. Porter received his MFA from Ohio University. His oil paintings are surrealist in nature, often depicting dramatic, exquisitely rendered landscapes interposed with mysterious still-life or tractor-trailer trucks indecipherably blended into the natural scenery.

If there was an exhibition that would make you want to spend all day in an art gallery, this would be it. The exhibition will be on display through September 28th.
