Imagine if drinking a beauty tonic could bring your inner glow to the surface. Many of us spend a lot of time on our morning and evening skincare routines, but what if there was a beauty product that you could take with you. And better yet, what if it was a ready to drink formula that you could just pop in your purse and drink on the go?
Today I’m introducing Miranda Li who has done exactly that. In this interview Miranda shares about what sets Rōzes Beauty apart from other brands and how she’s used her background in both Eastern & Western cultures to create a truly unique product unlike anything else currently on the market.
Tell me a bit about why you founded Rōzes Beauty…
Rōzes came into my life when I really needed a win. I was struggling to find a job that allowed me to be my authentic self. As a Canadian, following my passions and working for my dream job was out of the question. I was limited to only working at companies and in jobs that would provide international job security – nonexistent. Since day one, I had been put into this box, a box that decided what my future career would be and who I was, a box that ultimately made me feel so trapped and hopeless. The stress of not knowing who I was and where I would be caused a lot of mental and physical stress on my body. I went through a period of depression where I felt a sense of low self worth and confidence and suffered from hormonal imbalance, chronic fatigue and irritating skin conditions.
Rōzes Beauty came to me when I was rock bottom, unfamiliar with who I was and what I wanted in life. Rōzes was, and still is, my new light of inspiration, motivation, and passion for life. The idea for my brand really comes from a place of past experience and future exploration. It embodies my identity: my Eastern roots and Western upbringing; the search for balance amidst all that goes on in our lives; and that we all deserve self-love and care no matter what is going on in our lives. All these past experiences have led me to create the Beauty Tōnics. It led me on a journey of exploration of not only my needs but the needs that aren’t met for other women like myself. I wanted to bring more emphasis to the holistic approach of beauty and wellness, that beauty comes from the inside out. I wanted to share a new way of supplementing our diet and skincare. A way that’s not only more effective, but also super convenient and tasty!
How did you decide on the name for the brand?
Growing up, my family incorporated whole foods and natural ingredients into my diet to combat stress, health and skin issues. Roses was one of my favorite natural ingredients used growing up. To this day, I still use it to make the same elixirs and teas to promote skin health and overall wellbeing. It’s also a key ingredient used in all our Beauty Tōnics! Roses are a symbol of love, balance and youthfulness. I hope our roses will gracefully guide you to reveal your inner #RōzesGlow.
With a unique twist to the word “roses,” drawing inspiration from the Japanese spelling of roses (rōzu), I created the name for my brand: Rōzes.
You grew up in four different countries surrounded by different cultures. How did this influence you when it came to creating a product that was a blend of both Eastern and Western cultures?
My inspirations for Rōzes as a whole came from my Eastern roots as well as my Western upbringing. I grew up moving between 4 countries which gave me a better understanding of different cultures, practices and lifestyles. When I first moved to China, I was introduced to traditional Chinese medicine, the doctor prescribed me a natural blend of ingredients that I had to drink everyday. Frankly, it tasted disgusting… it required a lot of patience, nose pinching and chugging. But over the course of a few months, it completely cleared up my skin, but most importantly improved my overall health and wellbeing. A few years later, my family moved to the US, and my doctors here prescribed me medications that worked like a miracle. It worked faster and had no taste, but on the downside, it caused other underlying issues.
So when I was creating my Tōnics, rather than choosing one or the other, I found the best approach was combining both Eastern and Western influences. And with the help from a naturopathic doctor here in LA and a traditional chinese doctor in China, I was able to create my Rōzes Formula.
What do you think sets the Glassy Glow Beauty Tonics apart from other supplements / skincare products available on the market?
Our Glassy Glow Beauty Tonics are the first ready to drink beauty tonics made with the World’s most powerful antioxidant: Astaxanthin. Along with this powerhouse ingredient, all our ingredients are not only clean and minimally processed but also super effective — showing results in as little as 4 to 8 weeks with continued use. Our collagen comes from cod fish because through clinical research, we discovered that marine sources are the best kind of collagen for skin health and is 15x more bioavailable than other sources like bovine. Unlike other tonics or supplements, our Beauty Tōnics are inspired from Eastern medicine and are also formulated with botanicals and superfoods used for centuries in China to help with whole body wellbeing.
Other than our formula that sets us apart, we are also one of the only skin supplements that are made ready to drink and that come in liquid form. It makes it truly more convenient, enjoyable, and more effective and tastier than taking pills.
Why did you decide to create a liquid based product versus a supplement?
Liquid form was very intentional. I couldn’t find anything on the market that was made in a ready to drink format. Almost all supplements were in powder, pill, or gummy form. Liquid is not only convenient, making it easy for us busy modern women to just grab, open, and enjoy, but it’s also 98% more effective than taking pills or gummies.
As someone who is always on the go, I valued convenience, but not at the expense of efficacy. The Beauty Tōnics are able to fix both pain points for me and I hope to share it with other women as well.
How long did it take you to come up with the perfect formula for Glassy Glow that was not only filled with skincare benefits but also tasted great?
It took me around 7 months to finalize my formula and complete the flavor iterations for Cucumber Mint, Hibiscus Blood Orange, and Ginger Lemon. I wanted to create something that was not only effective, but also super tasty. Adjusting the unique formula dosages was out of the question. There was so much to consider, such as what flavor profiles work best with the active ingredients and what volume is best for taste and texture.
In the very beginning we tested different volume sizes from 2oz all the way to 8oz and different flavor pairings like Rose Lychee and Rose Asian Pear. With a lot of research and help from my medical advisors, the Beauty Tōnics were formulated to promote skin health and overall wellbeing.
Your Beauty Tonics are non-GMO, sugar-free, caffeine-free, gluten-free, dairy-free. Where do you source the ingredients in your Glassy Glow Tonics?
We make sure the ingredients we source is high in quality, clean and minimally processed. The ingredients come from all over the World. Our Astaxanthin and Vitamin C are sourced here in the US, Marine Collagen in Canada, and the rest of the Eastern superfoods from China.
Glassy Glow is currently available in three flavors (Cucumber Mint, Ginger Lemon and Hibiscus Blood Orange) which out of the three is the most popular with your customers?
Hibiscus Blood Orange has been the most popular! My personal favorite is Cucumber Mint. I made sure that all the tonics are light and refreshing so none of the flavors are too overpowering or sweet.
Back in December Rōzes Beauty was at the Love Beauty Wellness Festival Holiday Market in LA. What was it like meeting some of your customers in person?
It was both very exciting and humbling. It sparked life into everything I have been working on and reconfirmed my WHY: why I was doing this in the first place.
Do you have plans for releasing new flavors in 2020?
In 2020, I will not be releasing any new flavors, but I will be expanding my sales channels. I hope to expand from only selling online and at events/pop ups to selling at natural food stores, clean beauty stores, and work out/wellness studios! What are your words of advice for anyone considering founding their own brand?
Stick to it. It takes a lot of grit and patience even just to get to the starting line. Rōzes took me a little over a year to build and launch. If I had given up in the middle, I would not have been able to share my mission and Beauty Tōnics with other women like yourself. Remember, keep at it. You will experience highs and lows but know that hard work will pay off, I promise.
